BEHINDGRAIN AND PATINA::
✦ Zine
Every object has its own grain.
The go board, the soban, the broom, the sotdae. The red plastic chair on a street corner, the playground slide, the traffic cone by the road. Each with its own texture, its own feel, all of them quietly holding up daily life on this land. Some of them, in fact, were never Korean to begin with. Different as their origins are, they all became familiar to our eyes over time, and slowly, the same grain settled into them.
Time settles onto that grain.
Through touching, using, wearing down, an invisible layer builds on the surface of things. The shine on old wood and the fading of worn plastic are, in the end, both marks left by time. Different in material, different in era, but each has watched over the same floors, the same streets, and in that, they are equal.
What defines something as Korean may not be whether it carries the label of tradition, whether it was made here or came from elsewhere, whether it is old or new. It may simply be how long it has stayed with us.
I draw no line between tradition and the present, between what is native and what was borrowed. I erase the boundaries of time and place, and gather the colors and objects of Korea in all their variety.
These things we keep beside us without a second thought — may be the most Korean of all.
